Celebrating Our Third Year with Trash the Runway

Trash The Runway is changing the lives of young people and developing better leaders of tomorrow by unlocking resilience, confidence, and creativity using fashion and design as a catalyst for new ways of critical thinking. Through its mentorship program and design competition, Trash The Runway challenges middle and high school students to create high-fashion garments entirely out of found, non-recyclable or non-compostable materials, culminating in a runway fashion show that rivals the beauty and creativity of professional couture shows. A unique experience, Trash The Runway inspires participants, volunteers, and the broader community to think big, be empowered, and take an active role in driving change.

How did K&CO get involved?

The world gets smaller everyday is something you will hear Eileen saying regularly. How K&CO got involved in Trash the Runway is a story about Eileen connecting to people she used to work with in the past.

If you have read Eileen’s bio then you know that she used to work for some of the best salons in Boulder before she went on to open her own. One of them was Twig hair salon. When Eileen was at Twig she was a part of the education team. She trained the people who were just coming out of school to be a stylist. In addition to being a part of the education team she also was a part of the creative team that styled for photoshoots and events like Trash the Runway.

Twig used to be the salon that styled Trash the Runway. A few years ago when Trash the Runway reached out to the original owners of Twig, they referred them to Eileen. The reason being that Eileen is so incredibly passionate about her work as a stylist and the community here in Boulder, CO.

When presented with this huge compliment, Eileen took the torch and ran with it. Hearing the earth conscious message that Trash the Runway was projecting out into the universe sealed the deal for her.

The reason K&CO loves Trash

At K&CO we are passionate about recycling. So passionate that we even recycle the hair we cut, the foils we use, whatever color is left over at the end of the service. We are going that hard at recycling. Since we recycle deeply at the salon, we love supporting other organizations that are teaching young people about their impact on the environment. Eileen Kantor and her crew have been working with us on our Trash the Runway shows for several years. Eileen has been an amazing partner in getting the participants of our show stage-ready. Her efficient, yet kind manner with the jittery teens and tweens has been an asset to our show. For the last two years, we have also included Boulder TEC students in the hair and make-up process, and Eileen’s oversight of these students has been instrumental in making the pre-show portion go smoothly.
